ABU DHABI // It is the only centre of its kind in the country, offering young men and boys a rare chance to turn their lives around. The campus in the desert outside Abu Dhabi does not look like much, but the staff at VEDC (Vocational Education Development Centre) in Al Shahama give hope for a job and a future to those who have nowhere else to go. Phase 1 - Foundation
The Foundation course prepares trainees for entry into the vocational programmes. It allows for multiple entry points depending upon age and ability.
During the first period (Induction Period) of the entry semester, trainees are grouped according to age so that all trainees are in the company of other trainees of similar age. This is done to eliminate the occurrence of bullying or other undesirable social behaviour.
In the Induction period trainees undergo assessment and evaluation to establish their educational level and their learning and development needs.
Depending on the results of the assessment and evaluation, trainees are re-grouped according to ability and they are then placed at the appropriate point on the VEDC learning and development pathway as shown in the VEDC Curriculum Strategy. (Appendix 4)
Trainees spend a maximum of eight semesters (144 weeks) on the Foundation Course, this being dependent upon age on entry and/or ability. Phase 2 – Vocational Studies
